History Made as Kats Football Gets First Win of the Season
SUNY Erie Community College football got its first win of the season, defeating Alfred university JV 40-36 on Sunday. Kats history was made during the game when sophomore Molly McGarvey made two of three extra points to become the first women to score points in an Erie football game.
The Kats offense, which has struggled to find it groove this season, put up an impressive 518 total yards of offense. It was a back and forth contest all day between the teams with Erie closing out the win when freshman Matthew Burnham recovered an Alfred fumble on the last drive of the game.
Quarterback Gianluca Fulciniti threw for 386 yards with four touchdowns. This sets a new Kats record for passing yard. The previous record was set in 2017 when Tyler Zielinski threw for 367 yards. Fulciniti's favorite target on the day also set a new school record. Sophomore Javion Monroe caught six passes for 198 yards and a score. The previous receiving record was 184 yards set in 2014 against Hudson Valley.
On the ground, Jaydakis Scott ran for 130 with two rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown.
On the defensive side of the ball, Noah Bowens and Patrick Burns had 12 tackles and one interception each.
The Kats Football program welcomed its first ever female players this fall after the women's soccer season had to be canceled. McGarvey, along with freshmen Grace Mattinlgy, made the jump to football who was also slight on numbers after last years football and soccer seasons were canceled due to the Covid pandemic. The ladies first made Kats history when they became the first women to play in an Erie Community College football game on September 27th at Brockport.
The football team will travel to Sussex Community College for an afternoon match-up on Sunday, November 7th. Kick-off is 12:00 pm.
