Kats Knock Off No. 2 Montgomery in National Semis
Abbey Lombard leads Kats with a goal and assist in ending Raptors' 15-game win streak
The Erie Community College women's soccer team advanced to the NJCAA National Championship game by defeating No. 2 Montgomery College in penalty kicks after two overtimes couldn't decide the 2-2 game.
Although penalty kicks aren't listed on the score sheet, Sam Carey had the decisive one that officially advanced the Kats, who became the only team in this year's tournament to beat a higher-seeded team. Carey's extra-session kick also halted the Raptors' 15-game win streak that dated back to the first week of September.
Carey gave Erie a 1-0 lead in the first minute of play after taking a pass from Abbey Lombard. About two minutes later, Kallie Smith sent a pass to Lombard who increased the Kats' lead to 2-0, just three minutes into the game.
The Raptors got a goal back before the first half ended and also scored the lone second half goal to tie the game at 2-2.
Hannah Clarkson made 14 saves in the cage in recording the win, as the Kats advanced to play the top-seeded Hornets from Broome Community College on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m.
